Deputies Fatally Shoot Robbery Suspect During Foot Pursuit In West Covina

WEST COVINA (CBSLA.com) — Deputies fatally shot a robbery suspect Thursday evening following a pursuit in West Covina.

The incident began when deputies received a report of a home invasion robbery in Walnut, near Lemon Avenue and Amar Road, according to Lt. Steve Jauch of the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

When deputies arrived at the scene, the suspect sped his black Dodge Neon towards them, prompting a high-speed pursuit. He reportedly had a woman and a 5-year-old boy in the vehicle.

The suspect drove on to West Covina, where he pulled into the parking lot of Bestway Supermarket and crashed into a box truck.

He fled the car, raced into the supermarket and out the back door.

Authorities chased him on foot into a residential neighborhood, where he ran through several homes.

Deputies caught up to the suspect and shot him as he was running through a backyard in the 19100 block of East Elberland Street.

The suspect died from his injuries at the scene.

Hours later, investigators were still searching for a weapon, Jauch said.

Authorities have not disclosed what prompted the shooting.

The woman in the car was detained at the supermarket for questioning. She and the child were not injured. Their relationship to the suspect was unknown.
