Riverside County deputy hospitalized following shooting in Thousand Palms; suspect in custody
A Riverside County Sheriff's Department deputy is in stable condition after being shot in the Thousand Palms area on Wednesday.
The shooting happened after deputies responded to Ramon Road and Robert Road around 7 p.m. to locate a man wanted for a hit and run.
When deputies arrived to the area they located the suspect along with another person inside a vehicle, according to the Riverside County Sheriff's Department. While authorities were detaining the driver of the vehicle for the outstanding felony warrant, the passenger shot at the deputies.
Authorities said the passenger then barricaded himself inside the vehicle and refused to follow commands and come out.
The Riverside Sheriff's Special Enforcement Bureau, California Highway Patrol and additional surrounding agencies responded as backup.
One deputy was shot and rushed to a hospital where they underwent surgery. Officials said the deputy was in stable condition around 11:30 p.m.
The gunman was also shot and taken into custody around 8:30 p.m. He was taken to a nearby hospital for his injuries.
Despite initial reports from deputies that the shooting occurred in Palm Desert, they later reported that it happened in Thousand Palms.
