Veteran Character Actor James Rebhorn Dies At 65
NEW YORK (CBSLA.com/AP) — James Rebhorn, the prolific character actor whose credits included "Homeland," '"Scent of a Woman" and "My Cousin Vinny," has died. He was 65.
Rebhorn's agent, Dianne Busch, said Sunday that the actor died Friday at his home in South Orange, N.J, after a long battle with skin cancer.
Busch said Rebhorn was diagnosed with melanoma in 1992 but managed to work until the last month.
Over the course of five decades, Rebhorn earned more than 100 credits to his name with recurring roles on "Homeland," "White Collar," "Law & Order" and "Boston Legal," among others. Rebhorn also famously played a prosecutor in the series finale of "Seinfeld," in which he sent the group to jail.
On "Homeland," he played the father of Claire Danes' CIA officer Carrie Mathison. He also had a recurring role on the USA Network series "White Collar" playing the FBI head of a white-collar crime unit.
Rebhorn was also known for his roles in a number of films, including, "Independence Day," "The Game," "Scent of a Woman," and "Meet the Parents," according to IMDb.com.
Rebhorn also frequently worked in theater, starring on Broadway in revivals of "Our Town," "12 Angry Men" and the original 1985 production of "I'm Not Rappaport." News of Rebhorn's passing sent fans and stars alike expressing their condolences over Twitter.
Rebhorn was the consummate working character actor. He didn't care how big or small the role was and he tackled daytime, prime time and movies with only concern the role was interesting.
One of his first breaks, 30 years ago, came on the CBS soap "Guiding Light." He played Bradley Raines, one of the most evil and vile characters in soap history — Raines even raped his own daughter.
The Emmy-winning actress who played his daughter Beth, Judi Evans, wrote on Facebook: "Such a wonderful actor, a great man, and a tremendously funny person. RIP Jim, it was an honor to know you and work with you..."
Rebhorn is survived by his wife, Rebecca Linn, and two daughters.
