Police locate 63-year-old man with autism; Was inside U-Haul truck when it was stolen in Anaheim
Detectives with the Anaheim Police Department requested the public's help in locating a 63-year-old man with autism who went missing Wednesday, along with a stolen U-Haul box truck that he was in.
Police received a call about the stolen vehicle in the 3100 block of West Lincoln Avenue at about 2:20 p.m.
When officers arrived to the scene, the caller explained that their rented U-Haul had been stolen and that James Blackwood, a 63-year-old man with autism and a mental age of a 4-years-old, was inside the vehicle at the time it was taken, a statement from Anaheim PD said.
Blackwood was described as a white male, 6 feet, 3 inches tall, weighing about 170 pounds and was last seen wearing a tan long-sleeved shirt and blue jeans.
At around 8:15 a.m. Thursday morning, officers announced that they had located Blackwood near the 3000 block of S. La Brea Avenue. He was reported to be in good condition, though he was taken to a hospital as a precaution.
The U-Haul is a 2011, 10-foot GMC box truck with Arizona license plate AE23468. The truck was seen traveling northbound on Western Avenue from Lincoln Avenue, in Anaheim as it fled from the area.
According to Anaheim PD, the stolen vehicle was last seen at around 5:10 p.m. Wednesday evening at a Chevron gas station in the 4400 block of S. Western Avenue in Los Angeles before it was located, along with Blackwood, on Thursday morning.
The suspect has been described as a Black female between the ages of 20 and 25, who was wearing a long blonde wig and a white bandana over her face.
Officers revealed that they had four suspects in custody, two males an two females. All were taken to a nearby LAPD station for further investigation, as they waited for Anaheim PD's arrival.
When they arrived to the scene, they found not one but two U-Haul trucks in the back of the Baldwin Hills Motor Inn.
The security guard working the overnight shift at the inn noticed Blackwood inside of the U-Haul throughout the night -- for more than eight hours.
The man who initially called police after learning that the truck was stolen is Blackwood's caregiver, and had left him the car while he ran into the DMV in the area.
