17-Year-Old Arrested In Deadly Long Beach Shooting

LONG BEACH (CBSLA.com) — A 17-year-old boy was arrested Wednesday on suspicion of murder in the shooting of a 26-year-old Long Beach man.

The boy, who was not identified because of his age, was booked for murder and a gang enhancement, Long Beach police said. Detectives say they will present their case against the Long Beach teen to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for filing consideration later this week.

Around 9 p.m. on Tuesday, officers were sent to the intersection of Gundry Avenue and 14th Street for report of a shooting, police said.

Upon their arrival, authorities found a man lying in the street. Paramedics transported the victim to a hospital where he later died.

The man's father has identified him as Jeffrey Keo. Keo, who police say was not a gang member, moved from Cambodia with his family.

His father said his son was heading to work before the shooting occurred. A preliminary investigation indicates a confrontation between the suspect and the victim before the shooting, officials said.

During the initial investigation, a man who matched the suspect description was found in the area of Walnut Avenue and 10th Street, which led to a foot pursuit.

A SWAT team was called to assist at the scene and officers set up a perimeter after the suspect fled. The search concluded as of 6 a.m., and the suspect was not found at the residence.

Evacuated residents were able to return to their homes shortly after 6:30 a.m.

The investigation is ongoing as the motive for the shooting remains unclear.
