Armed man sleeping on Metro bus in Glendale taken into custody

Police respond to man armed on Metro bus in Glendale

A man armed with a gun sleeping on a Metro bus in Glendale created a large police response as law enforcement worked to safely evacuate the bus, wake the man up, get him off the bus and into custody.

Around 9:50 a.m., Glendale police got a call of a man on the bus with a firearm. Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department deputies also assisted at the intersection of Los Feliz Boulevard and San Fernando Road, where the bus was parked on the side of the roadway.

Deputy Lucas Darland said during a bus driver shift change, the bus driver finishing his shift noticed the man sleeping in the back of the bus, and saw he was armed with a gun.

When officers arrived, the bus was evacuated and officers surrounded the bus, ultimately giving verbal commands that woke the man up.

"It was not  a violent situation, violent confrontation at all. So it appeared at this time, that he was sleeping, and through the deputies' verbal commands he was able to wake up and he exited the bus and they detained him without incident," Darland said.

With a heavy law enforcement presence, the man was taken into custody around 11:45 a.m.

It is not known at this time what charges the man could face, but police did recover a handgun from him.
