Good Samaritan Saves Toddler From Hit-And-Run Crash In Mid-City; Mother Killed
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Police Wednesday investigated a fatal hit-and-run traffic collision that occurred in the Mid-City area.
Shortly before 2 a.m., officers were sent to the 5200 block of Washington Boulevard for report of a single vehicle traffic collision.
Upon their arrival, police located one vehicle overturned with a 31-year-old woman and her toddler inside, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
A Good Samaritan who witnessed the crash said he rescued the toddler from the wreck before paramedics arrived to the scene.
"I saw the silhouette of a baby, and reached in and felt for the baby," said Manuel Savinon. "The baby started crying and was responsive so I pulled her away from the driver and took her out of the car."
Paramedics transported the victim's 2-year-old daughter to a hospital in good condition.
Angelyn Cobarrubia, of Athens, was pronounced dead at the scene.
Washington Boulevard will remain closed in both directions between South Redondo Boulevard to South Cochran Avenue for the next several hours, authorities said.
Shortly after 6:30 a.m., a tow truck flipped the vehicle from its roof back onto its wheels.
A preliminary investigation revealed Cobarrubia lost control of her vehicle and struck a light pole, which caused the car to overturn.
"It appears the vehicle behind her traveled at a high rate of speed," explained LAPD Capt. Edward Pape. "This is a really heart-wrenching moment for anybody. The fact that the child is going to survive is a miracle."
According to police, she was not wearing a seat belt at the time of the collision.
According to police, security footage revealed the crash was caused by a hit-and-run driver.
Authorities are searching for the drivers of two different vehicles that fled the scene.
Cobarrubia is survived by her three children aged 15, 5 and 2.
