LAPD pursuit of domestic violence suspect ends in shots fired in West Adams

CBS News Los Angeles

An alleged domestic violence suspect led Los Angeles police officers on a dangerous chase on Tuesday that ended in the West Adams area after the suspect shot at police.

Aerial footage captured the incident, showing the suspect down, and police officers detaining people at the site.

It all began in San Pedro when officers received a call about a man driving a white Maserati tailing an LA DASH bus after his alleged assault victim boarded the bus. The exact relationship between that person and the suspect was still under investigation, LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell said.

Police spotted the suspect pulled over on the 110 Freeway, but as officers approached the suspect sped away, beginning the pursuit. The suspect tried to lose police by running red lights and driving the wrong way through Inglewood streets.

Officers chased the suspect in a white Maserati on the northbound 110 Freeway, then on surface streets in the Ladera Heights area and eventually into a residential neighborhood near West and Jefferson boulevards.

After parking behind the multi-unit building in West Adams, the suspect exited the car and walked into the building. Officers arrived shortly after and encountered the suspect in the driveway.

"The officers had just approached, they had been in tracking mode, the front of the residence," McDonnell said. "Pulled out two guns, one in each hand and opened fire on the officers."

Officers returned fire and struck the suspect. A bystander suffered a non-life-threatening wound in the crossfire.

Paramedics took the suspect and bystander to the hospital.

McDonnell said no officers were injured, and it was unclear exactly how many of them opened fire or how many shots were fired in total.
