Stolen Kia pursuit ends with Hawthorne barricade and 5 suspects in custody

Deputies pursue a stolen Kia, with 5 suspects fleeing from the car into Hawthorne neighborhood

What began as a South Los Angeles pursuit of a stolen Kia turned into a barricade situation at the pursuit's end in Hawthorne Wednesday afternoon, as five suspects from the car fled into a residential building. Around 2 p.m., all five suspects were in custody, according to police. 

The pursuit began at Van Ness and Imperial Highway and move along the southbound 110 Freeway in South Los Angeles. Los Angeles County Sheriff Department deputies picked it up in the Wilmington area, as the Kia made its way from surface streets and back onto the northbound 110 Freeway.

The driver continued to drive recklessly, speeding and weaving through light traffic.

Sheriff's backed off and followed the Kia along the 110 Freeway, and onto the northbound 405. The Kia exited the 405, near LAX.

Around 12:54 p.m., the Kia moved onto surface streets, speeding in the Hawthorne area. 

Five suspects jumped out of the car and fled on foot at W. 129th Street and Jefferson Avenue, through the Hawthorne residential neighborhood. 

All of the suspects ran into a building on a residential street in the area. Deputies and Hawthorne police responded to the barricade situation and ultimately all five suspects were taken into custody around 2 p.m., according to police.
