Grand theft suspect fatally shot by police in South LA

Police fatally shot a grand theft auto suspect in South Los Angeles early Sunday morning.

According to a statement from Los Angeles Police Department, officers were dispatched to a home in the 6400 block of Hoover Street at around 4:30 a.m., after receiving a call that there was a "GTA suspect there now."

Police arrived to find the suspect sitting inside of an allegedly stolen vehicle in the driveway.

"After officers gave verbal orders for Perdomo to exit the vehicle, which were ignored, they approached and opened the drivers' door to make contact," police said.

They say that once they opened the door, they saw the suspect's arm "protruding from the back seat while holding a black handgun," which prompted them to back away and request more units.

The suspect then exited the vehicle, while still holding the gun.

Officers say that he continued to deny their demands to drop the weapon, firing a non-lethal round, which failed to stop him. He then "pointed the handgun at the officers," which prompted them to open fire.

The suspect was struck by gunfire and arrested at the scene, but died before he could be taken to a nearby hospital for treatment.

He was identified by the Los Angeles Department of the Medical Examiner on Monday as 25-year-old Olban Perdomo Rodas.

No other injuries were reported.
