Police detain a stolen vehicle driver in Lakewood after a speedy chase
Los Angeles Police Department officers chased a stolen vehicle driver for about 40 minutes Friday afternoon as the driver raced through mostly surface streets in the Long Beach, Lakewood area.
The chase of the Pontiac SUV started in the Wilmington area at East Anaheim Street and Avalon Boulevard. Two people were in the car, and the driver continued driving erratically on the wrong side of the road, over medians, up on the sidewalk, cutting through a gas station parking lot, and reaching speeds up to 80 mph on surface streets.
At one point, the car raced along with the passenger door open, and a foot was seen dangling out.
A passenger jumped out of the car, as the driver continued racing along surface streets near the Long Beach Airport, moving into Lakewood.
In a Lakewood neighborhood, the driver jumped out of the vehicle and sprinted through the streets. Around 12:50 p.m. police detained the man.
