Person killed in Tesla crash near Rancho Palos Verdes

A 70-year-old woman died Tuesday when a Tesla crashed into a power pole in the Rolling Hills area of Los Angeles County near Rancho Palos Verdes.

It happened around 11:45 a.m. in the 27000 block of Sunnyridge. The victim, identified by paramedics as a woman in her 70s, died at the scene, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

On Wednesday, she was identified by the Los Angeles County coroner's office as Tuba Ghannadi, 70, of Rolling Hills.

Neighbors told CBSLA Tuesday that the residential neighborhood where the crash happened has a lot of small and windy streets.

One witness saw the Tesla speeding downhill and seconds later heard a couple of loud booms.

The car first hit the utility pole, taking out power, then slammed into a car parked in a driveway before careening into a home.

"This isn't something that a normal officer was expecting when coming upon a scene," said Captain Joe Zizi of the California Highway Patrol. "Unfortunately, they were unable to save a life in this case, but at this point, it's up to us to investigate it to at least give the family some closure on exactly what happened."

A woman was inside the home during the crash and was not injured.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.
