Passenger Killed, Another Critical After SUV Slams Into Santa Ana Light Pole

SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A possibly impaired SUV driver slammed a car into a pole Friday in Santa Ana, killing one passenger and critically injuring another, police said.

The Subaru Forester crashed about 8:30 a.m. as it drove westbound on MacArthur Boulevard just east of Bristol Street, Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna said.

"We believe they were going at a high rate of speed," Bertagna said. "For some reason (the driver) lost control of the vehicle, it went up on the sidewalk and hit a light pole, shearing the light pole, and continued another 100-plus feet where the vehicle came to rest."

Three men and a woman, all in their 20s, were in the car. A 23-year-old male passenger died, while a 20-year-old woman clings to life, CBS2's Michele Gile reports.

The driver and a third man in the SUV were injured but expected to survive, Bertagna said.
