Investigation Continues Into Shooting Deaths Of 2 Palm Springs Police Officers

PALM SPRINGS (CBSLA.com) — A Palm Springs police officer was recovering at home Monday after being shot in an attack that killed two other officers.

The officer, whose identity is being withheld, is doing well at this time, according to police.

Hundreds came together Sunday to mourn the deaths of officers Jose "Gil" Gilbert Vega and Lesley Zerebny.

The shooting unfolded that afternoon when Vega responded to a domestic disturbance call located in the 2700 block of North Cypress Road.

Upon his arrival, the 35-year veteran of the department was met with gunfire through a closed front door.

An officer-involved shooting subsequently occurred.

Both Vega and Zerebny were pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later arrested John Felix, 26, of Palm Springs, following a lengthy standoff at the home.

Felix was booked on two counts of murder on a peace officer.

He is scheduled to be arraigned on Thursday in Riverside.

According to the police association, donations will be split equally between the families of the slain officers. To donate, click here.
