Only On 2: $2 A Gallon Gas Returns To The Southland (Wanna Know Where?)

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) —  Southland drivers haven't seen $2 a gallon gas in years.

But in a story that is Only On 2, we're revealing how and where you can get gas at that low price.

CBS2's Erica Nochlin visited the pump in question.

They're calling it a tank take-over.

The gas info site GasBuddy.com is taking over gas stations in surprise locations over the next three days.

The plan? To lower the price of gas in some LA and Orange County stations to just $2.15 a gallon.

Nochlin didn't have to look hard to find motorists excited about the prospect.

"Really? That would be nice," said one.

"Wow that's really cheap," said another.

"Where's it at?" said another.

"We haven't seen prices like this  in a very long time, the last time we saw prices that low was back in 2009," said Allison Mac of Gas Buddy.

Even with recent drops, LA still has some of the most expensive gas in the country -- an average of $3.30 a gallon.

"I just went to Iowa, and gas prices out there, are like $2.25,"  said Enrique Rodriguez, "why can't we have it?"

Our prices are higher even than Hawaii or Alaska.

Mac says it's because California depends on a limited number of refineries -- some of which have had problems this year.

That is why Gas Buddy wanted to help -- and it's also a way for them to promote their Gas Buddy App.

Nochlin was given a sneak peak.

One of the $2.15 stations will be the G&M on Imperial Highway in South Gate starting at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

"Right now I'm looking for an apartment, so I'm driving everywhere and the gas going lower makes it a lot easier on me," says Natalie Sams who is homeless -- the cheaper gas will make a major impact on her.

So Sams is perhaps speaking for many drivers when she says about the app, "Thank you so much!
