One dead after head-on collision in Lancaster

CBS News Los Angeles

One person killed in two-car, head-on crash in Lancaster early Saturday morning.

It happened at around 6:15 a.m. near the intersection of 55th Street East and East Avenue J, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

Firefighters arrived to the scene to find one person trapped inside of a car at the site of the crash. They were removed by crews before being taken to a nearby hospital, along with two other victims.

One of the people was pronounced dead at the hospital, according to California Highway Patrol officers. The two others suffered moderate injuries.

While their investigation into what caused the crash continues, detectives say that a Ford was traveling eastbound on Avenue J when a BMW driving westbound turned veered into oncoming lanes of traffic and caused the head-on crash.

Police say that the victim who died was a passenger in the Ford.

Detectives have not yet revealed if they believe alcohol, drugs or speed to be factors in the crash.

Anyone who may know more is asked to contact LASD's Lancaster Station at (661) 948-8466.
