Officials ID Second Boy Killed After Car Plunges Into LA Harbor
SAN PEDRO (CBSLA.com/AP) — Authorities have identified the second boy who died after his family's car plunged into Los Angeles harbor, killing his 13-year-old brother.
The family had left a waterfront restaurant Thursday night when their sedan ran off the road alongside a working dock at the Port of Los Angeles, landing upside down in about 30 feet of water.
The boys' parents swam to the surface, but the children weren't breathing when rescuers brought them up. The teen died several hours later at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center. He was identified as El Hassan Elmezayen.
Coroner investigator Joseph Cronin says the 8-year-old boy died Friday afternoon. He was identified Saturday morning as Abdelkrim Elmezayen.
Police are investigating the accident.
L.A. City Councilman Joe Buscaino, who lives in San Pedro, praised LAFD firefighter Miguel Meza, who jumped into the channel after the car went into the water.
"This man is a true hero in the City of Angels and I am so proud of him," Buscaino said on his Facebook profile.
