Officers fatally shoot armed suspect wanted in Atwater Village

Pursuit for stolen Mercedes SUV ends in deadly officer-involved shooting

Glendale Police Department officers fatally shot an armed suspect in Atwater Village Thursday afternoon.

The shooting took place in the 3200 block of Atwater Avenue after officers first attempted to initiate a traffic stop of a reportedly stolen Mercedes SUV at the intersection of Loz Feliz and San Fernando Road. Glendale police said the vehicle was stolen out of the Los Angeles Police Department Wilshire Division.

"A girl and guy came out," said witness Javier Salazar. "The guy ran into the street. We heard the cops yelling 'He's got a gun. He's got a gun.'"

Authorities then began pursuit of the vehicle at around 4:45 p.m., when the suspect is said to have crashed into at least vehicles as they attempted to flee from the officers.

No injuries have been reported from these collisions.

The pursuit ended when the suspect collided with a parked car on Tyburn Street and Atwater Avenue, where the shooting occurred.

"Right now, I don't know if the suspect shot at officers," said Sgt. Christian Hauptmann. "But I do know our officers did shoot the suspect striking him an unknown amount of times. He succumbed to his injuries. We did recover a gun in the suspect's possession."

The suspect, now identified as a man, was reportedly armed when they exited the vehicle, which prompted the shooting.

"I mean I was kind of scared too because of the gunshots," said witness Maximus Velasquez.

Officers recovered the firearm from the suspect and attempted to perform life-saving techniques, but the suspect died at the scene.

The passenger in the vehicle, a woman, was also said to have fled from the scene on foot, though they were detained without further incident.

According to the Los Angeles Fire Department, paramedics responded to a shooting at that location but were later canceled
