Police Fatally Shoot Suspect In Santa Monica

SANTA MONICA (CBSLA.com) – Police Monday investigated an officer-involved shooting that took place in Santa Monica.

The incident was reported shortly before 12:30 a.m. in the 3300 block of Pico Boulevard, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department.

A preliminary investigation revealed California Highway Patrol officers responded to the eastbound 10 Freeway at Centinela Boulevard for report of a man on the freeway.

Upon their arrival, authorities located the suspect standing near the center median, armed with a knife.

The man proceeded to run through the traffic lanes and off the freeway embankment, which led to Pico Boulevard.

At one point, he charged towards police, which prompted an officer-involved shooting.

The suspect was struck by gunfire, and was transported to a hospital where he later died. His identity is being withheld pending family notification.

No officers were injured during the incident.

The weapon was recovered at the scene.

The incident remains under investigation.
