The shooting was reported before 1:30 p.m. in the vicinity of West Olympic Boulevard and South Broadway. The victim was taken to a hospital, where he died, LAPD officials said.

Cell phone video shows the man, who appeared to be threatening officers with a pipe a few feet long, right before he was shot. Police said the man was tased before the shooting.

Witnesses said the man was threatening random people and one man was seen with a small wound he said came from the man's pipe.

The man has not been identified. He appeared to be in his 50s.

Clara Rios was working in her newly-opened barber shop on Broadway when things started to escalate in front of her shop.

"Just two gentlemen walking down the street arguing with each other," Rios said.  "One antagonizing the other. I'm still coming down from a bit of a shock. Never had seen something like that happen in front of me before."

The intersection is located about one block from the Orpheum Theater.
