Mudslide closes a portion of PCH in Malibu as crews work to clear road

CBS News Los Angeles

Saturated soil continues to be a threat following the heavy February rains, with Malibu roads seeing a fair share of mudslide activity.

A mudslide temporarily closed a portion of Pacific Coast Highway Friday morning as video posted to the  Malibu/ Lost Hills Sheriff's Station Instagram page showed a bulldozer pushing rocks and mud debris to the side of the roadway.

Around 9 a.m., the department posted on social media that the closure in the 20200 block of Pacific Coast Highway affected all lanes, but about an hour later the road was cleared and reopened to traffic.

As of Thursday morning, two southbound and one northbound lanes on PCH between Latigo Canyon and Corral Canyon reopened after rockslides, according to Caltrans.

Malibu Canyon Road remains closed Friday in both directions at Piuma Road due to a large mudslide. California Highway Patrol officials say the road is expected to remain blocked for an unknown amount of time.

The issues forced Pepperdine University to cancel all in-person classes Wednesday at its Malibu campus.
