Miley Flashed, Kanye Effused At The MTV VMA's Where Very Few Showed 'Bad Blood'
LOS ANGELES (CBS/AP) — Miley Cyrus' various costumes for Sunday's MTV Video Music Awards were for the most part nearly naked — and then she took it a step farther and flashed her nipple during a costume change.
As the camera panned backstage, Cyrus failed to cover up and the broadcast quickly cut away to the crowd while she continued to talk. She then said, "What's happening? Oh, sorry."
Throughout the show, she made drug references and sang about smoking marijuana during the final performance of the show.
Mariana Agathoklis, a representative for MTV, said the shot would be removed from future broadcasts of the show.
The Parents Television Council, an advocacy group, accused MTV of trying to create controversy.
"It's become their stock and trade — how can we outrage parents today? Let's play up the youth rebellion angle and do things that kids are going to love and parents are going to get outraged by," said Melissa Henson, the PTC's director of grassroots education and advocacy.
Cyrus has previously appeared on various shows wearing pasties, and her first outfit for Sunday's VMAs featured only suspenders as a top, leaving her breasts almost entirely visible other than a strip of covered skin.
After the show, Cyrus came backstage to pose for photographs in a bubble gum pink ensemble. She arrived with a lit joint, and passed it around to photographers.
"I've been doing this (expletive) for a while. Because you're all my friends, and my song is kinda, sorta about the love of marijuana and the love of humankind, I brought a little joint if anyone would like any. Anyone?"
When Miley wasn't flashing or changing costumes, there was enough else happening to keep the controversy machine in full overdrive.
It is the VMA's after all. So expect weird, unexpected, strange. Did I just see that moments?
There was Kanye West, during a long acceptance speech, blurting out that he had his eyes on a White House run in 2020.
And speaking of eyes, Justin Bieber got so emotional singing his latest song, "What do you Mean?" his welled up with tears and he covered his face.
CBS2's Entertainment Reporter Suzanne Marques says Taylor Swift and Nicki Minaj started the show by seeming to stick a fork in their "feud."
Seven years after Kanye famously interrupted a winning acceptance speech saying he thought Beyonce should have won, Taylor Swift presented him with the prestigious Vanguard Award. She even said, "Kayne West has had one of the greatest careers of all time!"
Swift could afford to be generous and magnanimous. She went home with four Moonmen, including the most-covered Video of the Year.
