Memorial Unveiled In Honor Of Slain DEA Agent During Red Ribbon Week

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A memorial was unveiled Wednesday in honor of a slain Drug Enforcement Administration agent whose death in 1985 was impetus for the annual Red Ribbon Week.

A ceremony was held between 9:45 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. at Loyola Village Elementary School, 8821 Villanova Ave.

Students also took part in anti-drug performances and essay contests and listened to inspiring speeches by distinguished law enforcement and community members.

The artist commissioned memorial was created in memory of DEA Special Agent Enrique "Kiki" Camarena who was kidnapped, tortured and killed in Mexico by drug traffickers nearly 30 years ago.

Shortly after his death, members of his community began wearing red ribbons to commemorate his sacrifice, and in 1988, Congress formally established Red Ribbon Week.

Red Ribbon Week, which was being recognized Oct. 23-31, raises awareness of drug use and related problems and encourages parents, educators and businesses to promote a drug-free lifestyle.
