Man's Murder Rattles Huntington Beach Residents

HUNTINGTON BEACH (CBSLA.com) — Residents in what is normally a low-crime area of Orange County are deeply concerned after a man in his 40s was shot to death in their community.

The shooting occurred Saturday night in the 200 block of Memphis Avenue in Huntington Beach.

"We just heard a strange sound. We thought it was firecrackers and then we heard some voices, and we thought it was one of the kids screaming or crying," resident Angie Dahman said.

Dahman later learned the strange noise she heard in the alley behind her upscale home was an argument and a fatal shooting.

"We were very shocked. Nothing like this has ever happened and we've lived here 10 years," Dahman said.

Police say they're very familiar with the victim, who was found suffering multiple gunshot wounds and slumped over a black beach cruiser bicycle.

Neighbors say that same night multiple cars in the area had been broken into and scratched with keys. Police won't say whether the crimes are connected.

Investigators have told neighbors they believe this is an isolated incident.

An autopsy is pending and the victim's identity has not yet been released.

Anyone with information about the crime was asked to call Huntington Beach police.
