Man Fatally Shot, Stabbed Outside Van Nuys Target Store
VAN NUYS (CBSLA.com) — A man in his late 30s was killed Tuesday in a random attack while on the job in the San Fernando Valley.
The man was in his work truck when he was shot in the chest and stabbed around 5 a.m. outside a Target store near the intersection of Hatteras and Sepulveda in Van Nuys, the Los Angeles Police Department said.
"Approximately five people here working, they were in the process of washing the parking structure," Lt. Jim Gavin said. "The victim was in the truck monitoring the pressure washer, and so once the pressure went down, they came to find out what was going on and that's when they realized their co-worker had been assaulted."
When officers arrived on scene, they found the suspect on the passenger side of the vehicle.
He tried to flee the scene, but officers tackled him and arrested him.
The victim was transported to Holy Cross Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead. His name has not been released.
The unidentified suspect, who authorities believe was under the influence of narcotics, was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
Police do not believe the suspect and the victim knew each other. A gun and knife were recovered at the scene.
