Man Sentenced After Pleading No Contest To Abandoning Dog In NoHo Alley
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — A 42-year-old man who authorities say abandoned a severely injured dog in an alleyway in North Hollywood was sentenced Wednesday.
Carlos Efrain Duarte was sentenced to two years in state prison after pleading no contest to one felony count of animal cruelty.
The dog was recovered in an alleyway near Laurel Canyon and Victory boulevards in July of 2013, the Los Angeles District Attorney's office said in a written statement.
The statement said Duarte, who was ordered to surrender to authorities on Sept. 30, will serve one year behind bars and will be required to attend psychological counseling.
The second year will be served under supervised release.
"As conditions for the supervised release, Duarte will have to do 40 hours of Caltrans work, 52 hours of Alcoholics or Narcotics Anonymous classes, and attend court-approved animal cruelty and neglect counseling," the statement said.
Duarte is also proscribed from owning any cats for dogs for a period of 10 years, authorities added.
