Man running on westbound 105 Freeway in Paramount shot, killed by CHP officer

A man who was apparently running in the lanes of the westbound 105 Freeway died after being shot by police officers in the Paramount area Wednesday afternoon.

The incident was first reported as a pedestrian being struck by a big rig at about 11:20 a.m. on the westbound 105 Freeway at Garfield Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol. The pedestrian was reported to be jumping in front of other vehicles, causing traffic to screech to a halt, and was hit at least twice more.

It's unclear what led up to the officer-involved shooting.

Los Angeles County Fire Department paramedics were called to the scene and took the pedestrian to St. Francis Medical Center, where he died. He was identified Friday as 34-year-old John Alaniz. 

No officers were injured in the incident.

The westbound 105 Freeway was shut down at Garfield and westbound traffic was diverted off at Paramount Boulevard. The Garfield Avenue overpass above the freeway was also closed to traffic. All lanes were finally reopened by 9 p.m.
