Man Hospitalized After Jumping From Santa Ana Parking Garage, Landing In Roof Of Moving Bus
SANTA ANA (CBSLA.com) — A man who jumped from the top of an eight-floor parking garage Wednesday in an apparent suicide attempt landed partially inside a Orange County Transportation Authority bus and was rushed to a hospital in critical condition, authorities said.
One of the agency's smaller buses was exiting the northbound Santa Ana (5) Freeway at the First Street/Fourth Street offramp at about 10 a.m. when the man landed on top of it, Orange County Fire Authority Capt. Steve Concialdi said.
The man, who jumped from the top of the parking garage, partially breached the roof of the bus.
"It's miraculous he survived," Concialdi said.
The driver pulled over and called 911. Firefighters managed to get the man, who was still able to speak, off the top of the bus and took him to Orange County Global Medical Center in Santa Ana.
The jump was a suicide attempt, according to Santa Ana police Cpl. Anthony Bertagna.
"He's extremely lucky that he did not hit the freeway," Concialdi said.
A Sigalert was issued for the offramp for about an hour.
