Man Fatally Shot In Florence

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Authorities Tuesday were investigating a the fatal shooting of an 18-year-old man in the Florence-Firestone area.

A Los Angeles County Sheriff's deputy found Alfonso Maldonado lying on a curb while he was patrolling the neighborhood around 10:30 p.m. Monday in the 900 block of Holmes Avenue, officials said.

Deputies said the teen was shot multiple times.

"The victim was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead," Dep. Kelvin Moody said.

"It hurts my heart," said Alfonso's mother Dolores Perez, who also lost her daughter to illness nine years ago.

Maldonado was finishing high school when he was killed and would have been the first person to graduate in his family.

A motive for the shooting was unclear and detectives were trying to determine if it was gang-related.
