Man dies in police custody after crashing into fence of Long Beach home

A man died in police custody moments after crashing into a fence in Long Beach on Friday. 

Officers were called to the 5300 block of Cerritos Avenue a little before 6 p.m. after learning of a crash in the area, according to the Long Beach Police Department. 

They arrived to find that the man had just crashed through the fence of a home and ended up in the backyard. It was there that he was placed into handcuffs, police said. 

Long Beach Fire Department paramedics were also called to the scene, where they assisted the man before taking him to a nearby hospital where he was later pronounced dead. 

He has not yet been identified pending notification of next of kin. 

As the man was in handcuffs at the time of death, police are investigating the incident as an in-custody death. They say that no use of force occurred.
