Man Suspected Of Murdering His Baby, Infant's Mother Tries To Flee Police In Park Lake
FOUNTAIN VALLEY (CBSLA.com) — Anaheim police have arrested a 24-year-old man wanted as a person of interest in the murders of his common-law wife and their 6-month-old son.
Kwane Carpenter was spotted early Tuesday by a security guard sleeping in his car at a Fountain Valley hospital parking lot, Anaheim Police Department report.
When he woke up to find officers standing outside his vehicle he fired up his engine. Police tried to stop him by pinning his vehicle with a patrol car.
"At one point, he drove towards one of our police officers, so that police officer fired two shots at the vehicle. One shot struck the vehicle and another one struck a fence," said Sgt. Tony Luce of the Fountain Valley Police Department.
The suspect careened out of the parking lot and onto Euclid Street.
Officers gave chase and followed Carpenter as he collided with a minivan and then drove onto the lawn of Mile Square Park.
That's where he exited the vehicle and jumped into a pond.
Patrol cars tore into the grass and illuminated the pond with flashlights. There they saw Carpenter standing in the water before officers ordered him to come out with his hands up. They sent in a K-9 unit to help drag him out.
Carpenter sat muddied, sopping wet and handcuffed on a curb, with an officer holding his head down, until he was placed in a patrol car.
He was taken to an Anaheim hospital for an injury to his wrist.
Investigators are questioning Carpenter about a gruesome discovery made at the Anaheim apartment where he lived with his common-law wife, their baby boy and her mother.
Officers arrived around 12:10 p.m. Monday to find Moureen Gathua-Carpenter and her 6-month-old son, Kyan, fatally stabbed in the 2600 block of West Ball Road after receiving a report about an assault in progress.
The infant was rushed to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The woman had already died.
The woman's mother arrived home to find her home had become a crime scene and began wailing on the sidewalk.
Authorities soon after named Carpenter a person of interest in the case.
