Man Behind Bars After Breaking Into El Monte's Historic Jail
EL MONTE (CBSLA.com) — Police say a 31-year-old man who broke into El Monte's historic jail Tuesday is now in an actual jail on suspicion of burglary.
Adolfo Vargas, of El Monte, was found inside the wooden jail at Pioneer Park around 11:45 a.m., police Sgt. Roger Cobian said.
Vargas was cooperating with investigators, he said.
The jail was built in 1880 by William R. Dodson and donated to the El Monte Historical Society by his granddaughter, according to a plaque on the jail.
Vargas was being held on $20,000 bail in El Monte's current jail, according to sheriff's online booking records.
