Man arrested after pursuit ends with shots fired near Joshua Tree

CBS News Los Angeles

Deputies arrested a man who allegedly fired shots at them at the end of a pursuit in Riverside County on Saturday, prompting a lengthy manhunt until they were finally able to find him.

The incident started at around 3:30 a.m., when Riverside County Sheriff's Department deputies were chasing the suspect, 20-year-old Jonathan Rodriguez, who was allegedly armed, according to a statement from the San Bernardino County Sheriff's Department, who were assisting with the case.

As Rodriguez arrived in the 60800 block of Mountain View Trail in Joshua Tree, he exited his car and "subsequently fired several rounds from a firearm," the statement said.

No deputies were injured in the incident, but Rodriguez was able to flee from the area on foot, starting a large scale search.

He was finally located at around 2:20 p.m. inside of a home on Pueblo Trail, about four miles from where the pursuit came to an end.

"Rodriguez was taken into custody without incident," deputies said. "We would like to thank the residents and visitors of Joshua Tree for their patience and assistance in providing information during this investigation."

Residents were urged to keep windows and doors locked while the search continued.

It remains unclear what incident prompted deputies to begin pursuing Rodriguez in the first place.
