74-year-old allegedly killed by his neighbor after argument

Authorities say a 74-year-old man was killed after a disturbance ensued in the driveway of his home in Whittier.

"Something very dramatic," said neighbor Ramon Guitierrez. "We can't believe it happened, especially that close to us."

The incident in the 16100 block of Marlinton Drive unfolded around 8:45 p.m. Saturday. It was then that authorities say deputies responded to an assault with a deadly weapon call.

"It was reported that the victim was arguing with a neighbor prior to the disturbance on the porch," authorities said in a news release.

When they arrived, they located the man who had been suffering from apparent head trauma. Paramedics responded and pronounced the man dead. Guitierrez said the victim David Lee Stanley was hit with a bat.

"My dad got killed by one of the neighbors down the street," said son Jeffrey Stanley. "He argued with my dad. My dad told him to leave the house and get off the property and he didn't. I told him 'Go in the house and leave it alone.'"

However, detectives said the argument actually started between Jeffrey and the neighbor, and it was the father that intervened. Jeffrey stood by his story and said his father stood up to the neighbor.

"He was a nice guy," Jeffrey said while grieving his father's death.

Neighbors said there have been issues with Jeffrey in the past.

The neighbor, described as a man in his 20s, was being interviewed while authorities investigate. No arrests have been made.

Anyone with information was asked to call the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department's Homicide Bureau at (323) 890-5500.
