Man, 52, Behind Bars After Pipe Bomb Found In His SUV

NORTHRIDGE (CBSLA.com) — A 52-year-old Encino man was in custody Thursday on suspicion of carrying a pipe bomb in his vehicle.

The device was found on the floor of David Patton's Dodge SUV during a traffic stop around 12:50 p.m. Wednesday at Reseda Boulevard and Devonshire Street, Los Angeles police Lt. Jason Zabel said.

Several businesses and residences in the area were evacuated as a bomb squad was called to the scene. A robot was used to bring the pipe bomb to a safe area before it was detonated.

Patton, who was booked for reckless possession of a destructive device, was being held on $500,000 bail, according to Zabel.
