Man, 18, Charged In Sylmar Killing Of Former Soldier
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — An 18-year-old man was charged Friday in connection with the killing of a former soldier in Sylmar.
According to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office, Vincent Anthony Estrada faces one count each of murder, attempted murder and discharge of firearm with gross negligence.
The case also includes an allegation that he committed the offenses for the benefit of a criminal street gang, authorities said.
He pleaded not guilty Thursday to the charges.
Prosecutors explained Estrada, who police believe is a gang member, is accused of fatally shooting Francisco Garcia, 21, on Nov. 9. while he was with a group of people near Sylmar High School.
Bail has been set at more than $2 million, the District Attorney's Office said.
If convicted, Estrada faces a maximum sentence of life in state prison.
He is expected back in court Dec. 18 in Los Angeles.
