Los Angeles Girl Scouts Embezzler Gets Prison
LOS ANGELES (AP) — A former employee who embezzled nearly $370,000 from the Girl Scouts of Greater Los Angeles has been sentenced to a year and eight months in federal prison.
Prosecutors say Channing Smack was sentenced Tuesday and ordered to repay the money. He pleaded guilty in January to mail fraud and money laundering.
Smack was a senior property manager for the LA Girl Scouts council and was responsible for overseeing 22 properties.
Prosecutors say he issued checks for maintenance services to a company registered in the name of his dead brother.
Authorities say the checks were deposited into two bank accounts that Smack accessed to pay for personal expenses.
