Los Angeles County teenage girl stabbed to death by 18-year-old "acquaintance," sheriff says

CBS News Los Angeles

A 17-year-old girl was stabbed to death by an 18-year-old man Friday night, according to the Los Angeles County's Sheriff's Department, which has described the suspect as an "acquaintance" of the victim.

Azusa police officers responded around 10 p.m. to a report of an assault with a deadly weapon in the 300 block of North Soldano Avenue in the city of Azusa, where they found the girl suffering from stab wounds, sheriff's officials said. She was rushed to a hospital where she was later pronounced dead.

Homicide detectives with the sheriff's department took over the investigation. The department has said the victim's identity is not being released since she is underage.

On Saturday morning, sheriff's officials confirmed the suspected killer was taken into custody. His identity had not been released by sheriff's officials as of 2 p.m. Saturday.

No other information have been released by the law enforcement agency, including a suspected motive or details about whether — or how — the suspect and victim may have known each other.

The case will be presented to the LA County District Attorney's Office for consideration of charges.

Anyone with information is urged to reach the sheriff's department's Homicide Bureau at 323-890-5500. Those wishing to remain anonymous can call LA Regional Crime Stoppers at 800-222-TIPS (8477) or visit lacrimestoppers.org.
