Los Angeles Chargers donate $200,000 to help with wildfire relief

CBS News Los Angeles

The Los Angeles Chargers announced a $200,000 donation to help those affected by the devastating wildfires in Southern California.

"While we're currently experiencing unprecedented conditions that seemingly cannot get any worse as we deal with multiple fires across our region, we're also witnessing our community at its very best," said Chargers Chairman of the Board Dean Spanos.

The funds will be sent to the American Red Cross, LA Fire Department Foundation, Team Rubicon, pet rescue organizations as well as other efforts helping evacuees, first responders and others.

"The bravery, selflessness, courage, sacrifice and compassion on display over the past 24 hours by first responders, good Samaritans, friends, family and neighbors alike has been remarkable," Spanos said. "Our hearts are with everyone who has been displaced by these fires, the firemen and police officers and frontline workers who are risking their lives to keep us safe and those among us who have stepped up to assist one another in this incredible time of need."

The team asked anyone attending its "Charge Up to Playoffs" event to bring donations, including the following items:

  • bottled water
  • blankets
  • new or gently used clothes
  • first aid kits
  • hygiene products (soap, shampoo, deodorant, saline solution, toothpaste, toothbrush, hand sanitizer)
  • baby supplies (diapers, formula, wet wipes)
  • feminine hygiene products
  • paper towels
  • toilet paper
  • portable chargers
  • pet food
  • water

While the Chargers canceled the event in Sherman Oaks because of the fires, similar gatherings in Orange, Rancho Cucamonga and Hermosa Beach will continue as scheduled.
