Local Theaters Implementing Bans On Costumes For New 'Star Wars' Film

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The countdown is on until The Force Awakens, but movie-going fans may have to leave their full Star Wars costumes at home.

This photo was tweeted out at Cinemark Theater, showing tickets are on sale now, but also showing the fine print at the bottom that reads, "no face coverings, face paint, or simulated weapons -- including light sabers -- will be allowed in the buildings."

That means if you have a Darth Vader mask or clone trooper mask, you're going to have to resist the urge to bring them with you to the movie.

The presumed reason for the ban is for the safety and security of movie patrons following some high profile and deadly incidents across the country.

In 2012, James Holmes killed 12 people during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight Rises.

In July, a man shot 11 people, killing 2, during a Louisiana screening of the movie Trainwreck.

As a result, even big theater chains like AMC are adopting a similair policy for The Force Awakens.

AMC is telling its patrons: "Guests are welcome to come dressed in costume, but we do not permit masks. In short, bring your light saber, turn it off during the movie, and leave the blaster and Darth Vader mask at home."

CBS2/KCAL9's Jennifer Kastner spoke to Star Wars fans at the local hobby and collectable shop called Knight Ware Inc in Studio City.

"Having a prohibition on something like a mask or plastic weapon is not going to do anything but provide an allusion of keeping people safe," Matthew Strunin said.

"You're in a dark space... you don't know what their intentions are. You don't know if they're concealing weapons. You wan't to be able to identify people in the heat of the moment," Chris Kapica added.

Star Wars: The Force Awakens comes out on December 18th.
