Lawmakers Approve $100 Million Boost For UC, CSU
SACRAMENTO (AP) — Democratic lawmakers have approved legislation that would give the University of California and California State University systems a financial boost this year despite Gov. Jerry Brown's opposition.
Lawmakers approved AB1476 by Democratic Assemblywoman Nancy Skinner of Berkeley early Saturday. The bill providing an extra $50 million each to the UC and CSU systems now heads to the governor's desk.
The budget Brown signed this summer included the $100 million if the state received a certain level of revenue from property taxes. The taxes didn't materialize, but Skinner says revenue was "just shy of that," and the universities need the money.
The bill also included $3 million to provide legal help to undocumented minor children from Central America and $27 million to design a new Sacramento County courthouse, among other items.
