LAUSD To Discuss Possible Layoffs For More Than 600 Employees
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — The Los Angeles Unified School District Tuesday will consider authorizing layoff warning notices to more than 600 employees.
The proposed list will include more than 260 adult education teachers, 59 counselors, dozens of foreign-language teachers and 63 psychiatric social workers.
The district is facing a roughly $158.3 million budget deficit heading into the 2015-2016 school year, according to a staff report.
The board will also discuss authorizing notices to certificated administrators, those with expiring contracts and others.
California state law requires the LAUSD to send warning notices by March 15 stating they may be laid off or reassigned.
The notices do not guarantee the employee will be laid off. The final number will be determined as budget discussions continue.
Leaders of the United Teachers Los Angeles union, which is now in stalled negotiations with the district, have called the move a "scare tactic."
They have been asking for an 8.5 percent pay raise for teachers, while the LAUSD has offered a 5 percent increase.
The layoffs were being discussed at a 1 p.m. board meeting.
