Large Sinkhole Swallows 2 Vehicles In Studio City
STUDIO CITY (CBSLA.com) — Two cars were swallowed by a sinkhole in Studio City Friday evening.
Sky 9 was overhead when the second car slid into the hole.
The second car was believed to be unoccupied at the time it slid below the street.
A female driver in the first car, which overturned, was able to crawl out with the help of LA City Fire, authorities said. She has non-life threatening injuries.
The sinkhole is located at Laurel Canyon Boulevard, at Woodbridge. The hole opened up about 8:30 p.m.
Stu Mundel, reporting in Sky 9, said Woodbridge was under water all day.
The windshield wipers on the second vehicle, a van, which landed almost on top of the first, could still be seen operating. The wheels were also turning.
Two tow trucks are on scene and will try to pull the cars out of the hole as soon as authorities determine if the ground nearby is safe enough for them to park.
KCAL 9's Peter Daut spoke to stunned residents who said they've never witnessed anything quite like this.
"Thank the Lord that we didn't get anyone wasn't trapped in there," said one resident."It could have happened to anyone who crossed [the street] today."
"There is a lot of traffic on this street," said another man, "I'm glad everybody's okay. This rain is crazy."
Daut also spoke to councilmember Paul Krekorian.
"DWP and Sanitation are on route," he said, "They have to determine the source of the [underground] water inside the hole. It's still flowing now. Once they make that determination they'll be able to plan a course of action for stopping the water and removing the cars."
