LAPD Detective Accused Of Making Racially Charged Remarks On Audiotape Relieved Of Duty
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Los Angeles Police Department detective Frank Lyga, accused of making racial remarks on tape, has been relieved of his duties.
Lyga shot and killed an off-duty officer, a black man, in 1997.
Last week, the LAPD announced it was investigating Lyga over a recording that purported to be him saying he had "no regrets" about shooting and killing the black man, adding he would have liked "to have killed a whole truckload of them."
At the time, the LAPD said Lyga felt threatened during an alleged act of road rage and concluded the off-duty officer, Kevin Gaines, had threatened him.
On Thursday, the LAPD said Lyga was relieved of his duties after new information that came to the attention of Chief Charlie Beck.
Lyga apologized for the comments heard on the audiotape and said they were embarrassing and inappropriate.
The department did not go into specifics about the "new information," saying it was a personnel issue.
