LA Mayor Heads For Sacramento In Push For Water Bond, Film Tax Credits
LOS ANGELES (CBSLA.com) — Mayor Eric Garcetti will be in Sacramento Wednesday ahead of vote by state lawmakers to overhaul an $11 billion water bond.
Garcetti is also expected to garner support from Gov. Jerry Brown and other legislative leaders for the expansion of a $100 million film tax credit program and funding for city projects.
The proposed water bond measure has the support of Brown and Democratic legislative leaders who are calling for authorization to borrow funds for projects such as water recycling, ecosystem restoration and new reservoirs.
State Republicans have been demanding more money for water storage.
Garcetti told KNX 1070 NEWSRADIO he hopes the funding can be used to make Los Angeles less dependent on outside water sources.
"Make sure it helps us clean up the wells and aquifers in the San Fernando Valley so we don't have to import expensive water that, quite frankly, doesn't exist during this drought," he said.
The mayor will discuss the water bond and other topics at a news conference scheduled for Wednesday afternoon, when he will be joined by Mayor Robert Garcia of Long Beach and other fellow mayors from around the state, including Chuck Reed of San Jose, Ed Lee of San Francisco, and Kevin Johnson of Sacramento.
