LA Air Force Base Lockdown Lifted After Reports Of Suspicious Person
EL SEGUNDO (CBSLA.com) — A lockdown at the Los Angelees Air Force Base in El Segundo has been lifted after reports Tuesday of a suspicious male with a backpack, authorities said.
The base, located at 483 N. Aviation Blvd., was on a reported lockdown just before 1:30 p.m. L.A. Air Force Base Public Affairs told CBS2/KCAL9 the lockdown was lifted as of 7:15 p.m. and the "all clear" was given.
No one was taken into custody and no one was hurt.
KCAL9's Kevin Takumi reports an officer claimed to have seen a man on the grounds with a tactical vest and a backpack, possibly with wires coming out of it, prompting a search of the base's three main buildings and outgoing vehicles.
KCAL9's Greg Mills spoke with Mary Amonte, whose husband works on the base.
The couple's 5-year-old daughter remained at a daycare facility there as the search for the man continued.
"She's OK. She's just kind of confused about what's going on. I told her that she might be there a little bit longer but that the other children would be there with her," Amonte said, adding that she had also spoken to her husband.
"He said that the base was on lockdown because there's a strange man seen with a backpack and they can't find him so they're on lockdown. He's OK. They won't let him on base," she said.
El Segundo Boulevard was shut down in both directions between Douglas Street and Aviation as a precaution.
