It's 'Really Cool': Grandson And Grandmother Graduate From College Together

LOS ANGELES (CBSLA) - Two new graduates share a special bond that goes beyond studying together.

Keith Taylor and his grandmother, Rosecedar Byrd, both received their diplomas at a commencement ceremony held at Indiana University South Bend on May 12.

"Not a lot of people can say they graduate with their relatives, let alone their grandmother, and I think it's just a really cool thing to be able to say," Taylor tells CBS affiliate WSBT.

Taylor got his bachelor's degree in biological sciences and Byrd got her master's degree in social work.

"Yes, it did make a big difference and I just feel like I'm complete now. I'm ready to go on and continue my career," said Byrd.

Byrd says the two grew an even stronger bond helping each other through college together.

"I've gone to him and said, 'Hey, can you help your nana with this math area.'"

Byrd is the first in her family to get a master's degree and says she's proud to lead the way for her grandson.

"It showed me that there's no rush to finish my schooling," said Taylor. "Oftentimes I get into a headspace where I need to finish it by a certain age or a certain time frame, but it just shows me that I don't need to do that."

Taylor says he will be applying to veterinarian schools to get his master's.

In the meantime, the two graduates will have separate celebrations before throwing a big party for the family.
