Irvine high school teacher accused of hiding cameras in student school bathroom
A teacher at Beckman High School in Irvine was arrested Tuesday for allegedly hiding recording devices in a school campus bathroom next to its swimming pool that was used by students and children alike.
Siu Kong Sit, 37, is an 8-year robotics teacher at the school and was arrested for possession of or manufacturing child pornography and burglary in connection to the hidden recording devices.
According to police, a contracted maintenance worker found the devices that looked like smoke detectors inside two poolside restrooms at the school and turned the items over to the school administration, which then contacted the police.
"Our school resources officer responded out to Beckman High School and was provided a device we have determined is a hidden recording device. That device was placed in two different locations, two different devices, placed in an all-gender restroom and right now we believe that device was placed there to record people coming in and out of the restroom," said Lt Cathy Scherer, Irvine police department
Detectives determined the devices recorded adults and children while they were coming in and out of the restroom. During the course of their investigation, detectives determined Sit had installed the recording devices.
"After practice when our practice finishes kids like 5-year-olds, 6-year-olds come in to do what they have to do to change and get ready for their water polo swim practice at 6 (p.m.), So that's the worry, there might be even younger kids than us, which is the bigger issue," said Cameron Hamadani, with the Beckman High School water polo team.
The school's principal issued a statement saying the district does not know how long the devices were in the restrooms and what type of content was recorded.
The recording devices were found in the restrooms on Monday and police say they were placed there this past Friday. Police believe Sit used several devices, placing them on and taking them off as far back as last year. So there could be a lot of victims involved.
Police are attempting to locate additional victims. Those with any information or who believe they may have been a victim are urged to call the Irvine Police Tip Line (949) 724-7104.
