Riverside County deputies shoot man in Perris neighborhood

Riverside County deputies shoot, kill man during probation compliance check in Perris

Authorities are investigating a deadly deputy shooting that happened in Perris early Monday morning.

Deputies with the Riverside County Sheriff's Office were called to a home in the 3300 block of Albillo Loop near Palma Bonita Lane at around 8 a.m. in order to conduct a probation compliance check, according to a statement from the department.

During the check, deputies say that they encountered "multiple male adults" in the backyard of the home. One of the men allegedly provided false identifying information and attempted to walk away from the deputies while "refusing their commands to stop."

"Deputies deployed a taser to attempt to gain compliance, but it was ineffective, and the suspect continued to walk away," the statement said. "The suspect then produced a handgun and a deputy-involved shooting occurred."

Paramedics rushed the man to a nearby hospital after he was struck by the deputy gunfire. He was later pronounced deceased, deputies said.

No one else was injured during the incident.

"The name of the suspect and the involved deputy will not be released at this time," the statement said. The deputy has been placed on paid administrative leave per department policy.

In the hours since, a large law enforcement presence has remained in the area, with RSO officials setting up a control center in the middle of the street outside of the home.

Footage from the scene showed forensic detectives scouring a home's backyard, where other investigators were taking photos.

"You don't expect anything like that to happen around here," said Edgar Garcia, who lives nearby. "So, when it does happen it's kinda surprising. I think that's why when I got up and I heard the loud bang, I did not expect it to be gunshots."

Anyone who has more information on the incident is asked to contact investigators at (951) 955-2777.
