Inmate captured after walking away from Mountain Fire base camp
The Ventura County Sheriff's Department arrested an inmate assigned to the Mountain Fire after he walked away from the base camp Monday night.
Prosecutors did not immediately charge the prisoner, 27-year-old Rudy Rasso, with escape charges. Rasso was part of a crew sent to the Ventura County Fairgrounds from the California Men's Colony, a male-only state prison in San Luis Obispo County.
Rasso walked away from his post at some point before 11:45 p.m., according to the California Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation.
Deputies started searching for him after determining he was missing. They located him after roughly three hours.
He was taken back to prison while the Ventura County District Attorney considered escape charges.
The California Men's Colony received Rasso on Oct. 25 from Riverside County. He was sentenced to serve five years and eight months in prison for second-degree robbery with an enhancement for inflicting great bodily injury and carrying a concealed dirk or dagger, according to the CDCR.
Prison authorities said 99% of inmates who escaped an adult institution, camp or any similar custody programs, were eventually apprehended.
